Ojos Feos is an all-original world music project, based in the Pacific Northwest, consisting mostly of musicians who have lived in developing countries. The music splices rock and blues with Afro-Latin rhythmic and linguistic flavors and is structured with an upbeat and driving tempo, in a high energy and danceable style. The tri-lingual vocal are performed using elements of bossa nova, samba, jazz cumbia, chachacha, flamenco, reggae, Cuban son and African highlife.
The songs bleed out the hardships of the politically oppressed and marginalized, portray man’s search for faith as well as his pleas for God’s forgiveness, and in the Delta tradition, the music relates both fondness and frustration with the opposite sex. The rhythmic groove is is delivered by the virtuoso bass lines of Chris Hale, the steady world beat maintained by Jeff Leadford on drums and the African and Latin flavors are decorated and defined on percussion by Eric Johnston. Dunya de Souza lends her smooth and soulful blues voice to mesmerize the audience in Spanish, English and African languages. Lead guitarist Dashel Ruiz adds crafty guitar hooks and amazing solos. On electric violin, Jeff Sullivan crafts beautiful violin melodies and fills, often utilizing effects from his pedal board. The all-original music project is led by multi-lingual vocalist, composer and multi-instrumentalist Robbie Cree.
