Sunday Psalms: Fictional Narratives Inspired by The Psalms, Proverbs, & Other Biblical Works
Dirty, cold, and dark. The stone walls of the damp cave pressed in around me, and I struggled to move. As the ceiling pressed in, walking upright had become impossible. Like a baby unable to walk, I was forced to crawl on my belly. Inch by inch, my bruised fingers felt to find the way. I have never been this confined.
What had started out as an adventure had turned into an explorer’s worst nightmare. I had been tunneling for several hours when a loose rock caused me to stumble. Tripping headlong, my flashlight slipped from my hands and shattered on the floor of the cave. I tried not to panic as I faced the terrifying prospect of trying to find my way in the dark.
“Just stay calm,” I told myself. No need to panic. I was an experienced caver. I could figure this out. I was used to hiking and tunneling.
After endless hours of perseverance, however, the anxious thoughts began. Drop by drop, the fear built up, and I was drowning in my own terror. I had finished all of my water, eaten all of the food I had packed. As time progressed, I slowly prepared for my death.
As my hope began to fail, a felt a sudden rush of wind brush past my face. A breath of fresh air filled my lungs, and then in the distance, I heard a voice.
“Don’t be ridiculous.” I know how the mind can play tricks on a person, and I quickly discounted the voice. But there it was again. A faint voice. Somewhere up ahead. Calling to me.
I raised my eyes and looked towards the voice, certain that I saw a flash. A brief spot of light somewhere beyond me, holding steady.
Renewed in my spirit, I pressed forward. Crawling, crawling. I eventually made my way to the smallest of holes. I eagerly pushed aside loose rock and debris that must have been there for years. Bit by bit, I dug until I had forged an opening large enough to squeeze through. With one final surge of energy, I pushed into free air. Blue sky. Green trees. A broad and spacious place welcomed me. I was finally free.
He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me. Psalm 18:19 (KJV)
