Sunday Psalms: Fictional Narratives Inspired by the Psalms, Proverbs, & Other Biblical Works
HAND MEETS FOG
City gates loom,
Tall mountains, walls of stone,
White granite, eternity high,
Swallowed up by autumn sky.
Heads tilt up.
Boy and girl are ants,
Droplets in life’s ocean.
Boy Courage catches his breath,
Takes girl’s hand.
Girl Caution, she trembles.
She’s not prepared.
This bit about the gates…
This wasn’t in the scroll.
But then again, when are surprises foretold?
Without a knock, no warning sign,
City gates crack,
An earthquake down from sky.
Gates groan, doors open, booming their call:
Enter if you dare.
Courage squeezes Caution’s hand,
Eyes wide, hearts pounding.
The terror of adventure.
They’ve been walking all night.
A mist, thick gray,
Through the crack.
“I’m scared,” breathes Caution.
“Me too,” admits Courage.
Caution grips his arm.
“We can’t see through the fog. What if we get lost?”
“But what if we find something?”
A sage, this boy,
Girl’s forever match.
With her free hand,
Caution reaches out.
Hand meets fog.
Mist encompasses fingers, five so small.
“Warm,” she decides.
Warm fog, cold hand, hopeful heart.
Courage steps forward.
Arm extends back, still connected to Caution.
A taut rope, his faithful arm.
Caution closes her eyes,
Takes one step.
Arms side by side, boy and girl stand in the crack.
One more step and there will be
No turning back.
“It’s not too late.
We can still turn around.”
Caution already knows this, but Courage must ask.
Must make sure.
Must stay together.
“We’ll be all right.”
Caution whispers her prayer.
“We’ll be all right,” Courage repeats.
Mist blankets the pair.
Girl pulses with Boy.
From somewhere within,
A hidden song.
Strings, flute, calling.
No words needed.
Courage and Caution step.
One big step
Inside the walls.
For we walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV)
